Spoiler Alert: Rant

Hello there, the following is a rant aimed at what happened today in my A-Level English class.

It is a second year class and there are about 15 people in it and we are currently doing text transformations and then a commentary about them. For anyone who doesn’t know that is taking an original text and transforming it into a different form in the style of a different genre or writer and then a thousand word essay of why you did what you did. We do 2 of each so one piece is the equivalent of 10% of our final grade.

Today my teacher came in and gave us what can only be described as a bollocking. Quite rightly as well. As she was marking our commentaries last night she noticed that one seemed disjointed and the writing style was different. She used a program called copyscape to look for any signs of plagiarism and it came around that this piece had an entire paragraph copy and pasted into it.

She then asked that this person apologised because it was an “insult to my intelligence” which no-one subsequently did. The teacher went and pulled this person from their private work and apparently “had a word”.

I personally believe that if this person gets off with a stern telling off it is a serious lack of justice and is totally unfair. In my mind i see no difference in this from texting answers in a examination. If this somehow slipped through the net then it is an unfair advantage to someone who clearly doesn’t have two ideas to rub together and one idea to feel lonely.

I hope this person quite honestly, quite harshly gets kicked off the course. To an exam board this is cheating, if this is found in the “official” piece of work then every single piece we have submitted comes under question and risks all of our grades. Once again being honest and harsh this person isn’t suited to English, they clearly don’t have a passion for literature and when asked a question they say “i don’t know”, in a class where almost every opinion is valid to not have one is criminal.
